Well, the way I am using my N900, I never have any reboots. Of course one could only test the likelihood of it being a hardware issue by factory resetting (reflashing) two N900:s and then having the same person use them on alternate days and then reporting back how closely they resemble each other. The same apps, if any, should be installed on both devices.
I can just tell you that I would be absolutely furious if my N900 rebooted spontaneously on a daily basis! It would constitute an unacceptable change to present behavior for me.
If its not broken hardware, why aren't ALL N900's plagued with this reboot?
Electronic components all differ in their behavior within certain tolerance ranges. They are not all exactly equal. What happened is that the OMAP3 power saving support in recent Linux kernels was assuming too short a tolerance range in waking up the CPU AFAIK. Some OMAP3s wake up faster than others (a deviation of nanoseconds I suppose), all within certain tolerance levels. So the reboots are a hardware issue, but not because of broken hardware, but because of the kernel being too impatient.

did have rebooting version but sent it to service week before walkaround was announced. the main reason was getbootstate-bug that "bricked" device and I had do reflash loosing all data etc. later that was also resolved and it can be repaired with flasher just by putting your device to r&d mode and back.
now i have a brand new device that doesn't reboot randomly. it is much easier than the older but i would also have managed with the rebooting one if info about those 2 bugs would have come before I lost my faith.
Most of the devices with random reboots have a hardware issue. It's not broken hardware, but the power saving timing tolerance thresholds of the OMAP3 CPU are too wide to handle for recent Linux kernels.
There are two devices out there with OMAP3 and recent Linux kernel, the N900 and the Droid. Both have the same reboot issues.
Now that Nokia identified the bug, they have a fix for the kernel and it will most likely be in the next FW upgrade, since this is a critical issue.
No idea, what the Droid will do, though.
If this is a hardware issue - will we have to replace our N900's? The quick-fix works great for me. Thanks for a relevant comment.
