For me, battery life is slightly better as the phone is mostly idling at 125Mhz .

It doesn't affect battery life much since it can idle @ 125 now.
If you reflash a kernel it doesn't reset anything, all apps, contacts, calendar entries will stay.
Backups are recommended but it won't touch anything except the kernel.

Of course, you should make sure that you can flash by using USB before trying a new kernel, since if you flash a problematic kernel you won't be able to replace it with a working kernel on the device itself.

Thanks for mentioning this which I think I will try since I don't have a PC nearby (if something goes wrong I just have to wait until I get my hands on a pc)

Before I go on I would however like to hear what the difference is between the fiasco-flasher (in /usr/sbin) and the flasher (in /usr/bin). Should I rather use the latter?

And now we are at it with questions I might as well throw in another one: From the wording of the wiki it seems that there is no flasher-3.5 for linux 64 bit. Is this correct?

Yes, but the 32-bit flasher works at least in Ubuntu 64-bit

going to play around with this for a couple of weeks whilst im on holiday, going to take some screen shots of battery graph.

hopefully compare with someone who has got 750, 800, 850 and 900 on their system!

N900: Windows 64bit (Vista&7)
According to this post, windows driver signing can cause problems. You either need to turn on the loading of unsigned drivers or boot your computer to whole another OS.

[edit] Option 1
Disabling signed driver detection is done by choosing the option "Boot without checking for signed drivers" (or something similar) in the boot-menu. To display the boot-menu press the "F8" key as soon as the windows boot process starts. The rest of the process is similar to XP.

Alternatively you can permanently disable driver checking via command line manager. There are good instructions for windows 7 available [1]

You can use [2] Microsoft Virtual Pc but when you connect your phone, press the "usb" button and select your device.

An alternative approach is to either download Ubuntu LiveCD and burn it to cd or create a persistent installation to usb disk. After that you must get (another) usb stick where you will download maemo_flasher-3.5_2.5.2.2_i386.deb -file (versions may vary) and firmware files needed for reflashing. Additionally one can save this page to usb stick just in case.

After that you only boot your LiveCD or persistent Ubuntu, install Flasher (doubleclick the file should work fine) and after that follow instructions from Linux - chapter.

Yeah, when I was talking about the batt life I meant while at regular use. Obviously at full load its going to drain 10 times quicker.

I really wanna try the 800mhz OC now

Do you guys recommend using the one with DSP OC too?

DSP helps with youtube etc.... but higher clock speed helps with that anyway! haven't tried any HD footage yet! may go for it
