Telus will *not* work on the N900. Telus employs HSPA/UMTS on 850/1900MHz. No GSM backdrop.
Apart from WIND, only Rogers/Fido (and their mini MVNO's) will work, and will be 2.5G/GSM at that.

Hi,
I can't say what is best for western canada, but since we share some providers here in Ottawa I will tell you what I have found:
AFAIK only Wind mobile will support 3G on the N900, I believe some of the other providers purchased some frequencies which will work with the N900, but they have no plans to use it - correct me if I am wrong please!
Wind is not yet available in Ottawa, but should be sometime early 2010. The only problem with Wind is that they do not have good coverage yet, you will pay extra for roaming onto Rogers or any other provider. As I visit Quebec City and Montreal a lot it would be expensive for me to use my phone there. (not to mention it would only be 2.5G, or edge speeds)
I am using my N900 with Rogers (same as Fido). It seems to work fine on 2.5G, but I am usually on Wifi so I can't say for sure how frustrating it will using this device on a slower 2.5 G connection for extended periods.
About getting a SIM Card, you should be able to get a pay as you go type account with any provider without a contract. The downside is (with rogers at least) that you can't get a data plan for it.
The below applies to Rogers:
The industry is pretty bad here, lets say you shell out $600 for an unlocked phone so you don't need to take a 3 year contract. They make you sign a 3 year contract on their Data Plan! The data plan has a lower termination fee, with a max of $100 I believe, compared to a max of $400 if you get a 'subsidized' phone.
In my opinion, there is no decent solution to having an N900 in Canada currently. (unless you go with WIND and live in Toronto/Calgary and never leave the city)

Our local providers are Rogers, Telus, Fido, Wind and Virgin. None of these providers sells the N900.
Telus seems to be the only provider that has service via a SIM card. Its month to month, no contract, pay as you go. But its only for 3G service.
The problem with 3G in Western Canada is that there is very little coverage. Calgary has coverage, Edmonton has coverage, there might be some coverage in between but not much. There is no coverage in Saskatchewan. Telus is saying they are working on it, but they are not promising a date. My wife has an iPhone on a 3G plan and we were SHOCKED to find out how poor the coverage is in Western Canada.
The only service that has decent coverage in Western Canada is HPSA or whatever its called. The N900 supports it, but nobody has a SIM for that service. They want to sell the customer a pre programmed phone for HPSA access.
Anyone else have this problem ? How do I get good coverage in Western Canada with a SIM ?
