I live in Calgary. I regularly travel to Saskatchewan. I want to buy an N900.

Our local providers are Rogers, Telus, Fido, Wind and Virgin. None of these providers sells the N900.

Telus seems to be the only provider that has service via a SIM card. Its month to month, no contract, pay as you go. But its only for 3G service.

The problem with 3G in Western Canada is that there is very little coverage. Calgary has coverage, Edmonton has coverage, there might be some coverage in between but not much. There is no coverage in Saskatchewan. Telus is saying they are working on it, but they are not promising a date. My wife has an iPhone on a 3G plan and we were SHOCKED to find out how poor the coverage is in Western Canada.

The only service that has decent coverage in Western Canada is HPSA or whatever its called. The N900 supports it, but nobody has a SIM for that service. They want to sell the customer a pre programmed phone for HPSA access.

Anyone else have this problem ? How do I get good coverage in Western Canada with a SIM ?

Hi,

I can't say what is best for western canada, but since we share some providers here in Ottawa I will tell you what I have found:

AFAIK only Wind mobile will support 3G on the N900, I believe some of the other providers purchased some frequencies which will work with the N900, but they have no plans to use it - correct me if I am wrong please!

Wind is not yet available in Ottawa, but should be sometime early 2010. The only problem with Wind is that they do not have good coverage yet, you will pay extra for roaming onto Rogers or any other provider. As I visit Quebec City and Montreal a lot it would be expensive for me to use my phone there. (not to mention it would only be 2.5G, or edge speeds)

I am using my N900 with Rogers (same as Fido). It seems to work fine on 2.5G, but I am usually on Wifi so I can't say for sure how frustrating it will using this device on a slower 2.5 G connection for extended periods.

About getting a SIM Card, you should be able to get a pay as you go type account with any provider without a contract. The downside is (with rogers at least) that you can't get a data plan for it.

The below applies to Rogers:
The industry is pretty bad here, lets say you shell out $600 for an unlocked phone so you don't need to take a 3 year contract. They make you sign a 3 year contract on their Data Plan! The data plan has a lower termination fee, with a max of $100 I believe, compared to a max of $400 if you get a 'subsidized' phone.

In my opinion, there is no decent solution to having an N900 in Canada currently. (unless you go with WIND and live in Toronto/Calgary and never leave the city)

Telus will sell 3G SIM cards to N900 users. I'm not sure if that allows data or not.

The Canadian cellular phone industry needs COMPETITION and fast. The options are terrible.

I think I am going to put my N900 purchase on hold until I can get better 3G coverage.

Telus will *not* work on the N900. Telus employs HSPA/UMTS on 850/1900MHz. No GSM backdrop.

Apart from WIND, only Rogers/Fido (and their mini MVNO's) will work, and will be 2.5G/GSM at that.

Ah good to know they don't have the basic GSM, I wasn't sure of that, what a stupid idea of them? No portability? what were they thinking with that 1G$ network?

I live in Calgary and I'm using my N900 on Rogers - 2.5G at best ( which is WAY TOO SLOW for this device ).Sometimes it even goes down to 2G BUT It performs much better when I get a WI-FI connection. Regular phone calls are fine - I have not tried SKYPE yet and I am reluctant to as it says you need a 3G connection. I got 3G when travelling to Fort Worth, TX and Mentor, OH - but was limited in data use due to my rogers contract :-(

Does anyone have experience using SKYPE on this phone without a 3G connection?

Does anyone know if/when we will be able to get 3G or HSPA+ on the N900 through a Canadian Carrier?

If my N900 cannot take advantage of the high speed networks in Canada I may look at getting a different phone.........

Yes, I am using my N900 on Wind's network here in Toronto, and I am on 3G, and make SIP calls, Google Talk with Video, etc.

It is a reality for some Canadians now - just have to wait until the country is blanketted.

I tried a Telus SIM in my N900 when I moved to Canada a few months ago and can confirm their network is not compatible with the frequencies the N900 supports.

I had a Rogers SIM card (2.5G only) as this is the only SIM card/freq combination that works here in Kamloops (and whole BC I think).

I have no data plan as they want too much for it.
Luckily I have WiFi at home and at work and when out and about I convinced myself I don't need it (and luckily Kamloops has a decent WiFi coverage for free [for now]).

How does one use an N900 on Wind ? I thought they needed an AWS phone ? Does the N900 support this ?

Thanks
