How can you accept something like this! I am from a former communist country and I know what you're living in. So now I'd never accept any kind of censorship or monitoring. You shouldn't be living in constant fear!
Anyway install OpenVPN with some free VPN provider like http://itshidden.com/ for example.
OK guys, got a workaround and have successfully installed 8 of the apps I wanted, it's a shame most of them are kind of, meh. anyway I spoke to soon earlier in the post when i said web proxies wouldnt work. SUBMONO - use Ltunnel or hidemyass or any free proxywebsite and it will work surprisingly.

well it's not really fear for me since i'm a foreigner the most they can do is deport me, say, if I research the wrong things online and get politically active or...show my students the movie "Red Corner"
anyway, I HAVE used itshidden before on my PC (windows) but dont know how to use OpenVPN at all. did a little bit of reading but it looked pretty complex, something about a .config file or something. I even installed it on the N900 (GUI and applet) but had no idea what i was doing so i took it off. could u maybe give us a walkthrough? since yes, the solution has been found for apps but those webproxies are unbearably slow and sometimes unusable when trying to access all the other websites named in the title of this thread.
You can setup a proxy in your connections advanced settings.

I tried plugging in the server and port number for a proxy app into my GPRS settings in connections advanced settings but...the browser said proxy refused connections. i think because, like in Windows, the app has to be running in the background.

I don't really know I guess it's not much different than setting it up on the desktop.
Maybe someone who has more experience with VPN can help out. You should really concentrate on that solution because it's the best in my opinion for your situation.
I'm interested in your observations, how do the native people perceive their situation? Are they aware of the "glass bubble", do they care, are they bothered? In my experience they are really afraid discussing those issues.
Glad you found a solution. The proxy I've written does not consistently work with all sites and I don't have the strength to sit down and figure out the different talking protocols sites are using so I can make sure my socket is listening or sending depending.
It works with sites like amazon.com and google.com great, but doesn't work on sites like store.ovi.com. I was writing it on the socket level (reinventing the wheel basically) so it could run on the N900 without need of perl modules. If I get any further I'll publish the results.
