It would be nice to be able to put generic file shortcut/thumbnails/links (like pdf, doc etc) on the desktop, like it's possible by default for bookmarks, for quick retrieving.

Any clever developer is interested? (or, maybe, there's some way already that I don't know of?)

Ok, eventually I found a way to hack this

Say you want yourfile.pdf as a shortcut on your desktop.
You open your microb browser pointing to file:///
Then you navigate your filesystem until you get to yourfile.pdf.
Long press on the filename link and choose add to bookmarks.
Change its name as pleased.
So you have a microb bookmark that links to yourfile.pdf.
Go to your desktop, open the desktop menu, add bookmark (that one).
Now when you click the shortcut, a microb window opens briefly, then yourfile.pdf is opened in the default pdf reader.
Unfortunately the microb window will stay open (close it manually).
You can change your shortcut name with Tweaker (needs rebooting).
You can also get rid of the bookmark in microb, the desktop shortcut won't fade.

EDIT Tweakr completely borked my desktop and throwed my device in a reboot loop
Stay far from that
Fortunately God [created | let evolve from amoebas] Jebba, Qwerty12 and CrckMc
I had to enable r&d mode like that
Code:
flasher-3.5 --enable-rd-mode --set-rd-flags=no-lifeguard-reset
then did what mr. Qwerty12 teached us here http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=473564&postcount=2 , i.e. editing /usr/share/hildon-desktop/transitions.ini and commenting out

* [edit_mode]
* snap_grid_size
* snap_to_grid_while_move

And now it's ok. Tweakr has been immediately zapped away from my tablet

Something whispers in my ear that with an appropriate javascript one-liner it's possible to open a file && close the microb window...
Someway I know it can be done, but have no clue at how
Anybody has ideas?

Hi Debernardis
I follow your instructions.
I create the icon on the desktop to a pdf file.
When I click, microB is open and then the pdf reader but it returns an error: "unable to view the file, file format not supported"
Same error if I try with an excel file.

From filemanager i can open the files with no problem.

I made many tests but every time I get the same error!

have you any ideas?
thanks!!

Ciao Elisabetta, are you able to open a pdf file from the internet? If you google i.e.
Code:
maemo filetype:pdf
and click on one of the resulting links, do you get the pdf reader?

I do not have the original kernel.
I've installed the kernel to get dual boot with nitdroid
This could be giving problems?

Maybe You shall try another approach - create .sh script, that open Your desired file on browser, then, later on the .sh script, close microB? Then, creating a desktop file pointing to that .sh. Should be much more easier than javascripting voodoo.

Advantage of this method is that You can set every icon You want for every file You wan't - via .desktop file.
Disadvantage is that You need .sh script for every file You want to have @ hildon-home, and You can't delete that .sh after. no big deal, thought - and, You can keep also "template-like" .sh script, where You only need to input path/to/your/file and (optional) icon - setting this would be much faster than bookmarking every file we want.

@Cepiperez, +1! I like your solution.
You should write a program for choosing the file, making or deleting, or editing a shortcut.

@abchobby, prova il metodo di cepipwrez, mi sembra migliore del mio!
