I thought it was a fair assessment of the device. You clearly mentioned several shortcomings. I for one look to your posts; among a few others; as a trusted source of information.

I notice in your review you state that the bluetooth tethering will only work if you have an EVDO data plan. Is this absolutely true? I am currently able to use my LG vx8300 phone in its 1x mode (EVDO turned off) as a bluetooth DUN with my laptop. But I am having trouble doing the same with the N800. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my settings (packet vs. data?). I keep getting an authentication failed on the N800 (yes, I've changed the auth info to the appropriate verizon stuff). The phone keeps disconnecting after 6 seconds. Any hints at what is going on?

No ... you need a data plan but it can be EVDO, EVDO rev A, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA - whatever will get you real internet access and whatever your provider gives.
