I don't believe anyone with an N800 has experienced a true white screen of death (WSOD) yet, hopefully Nokia have gotten to the bottom of that problem and designed it out of the hardware update. There are reports of flakey behaviour with some N800s (wireless and radio together causing reboots), not sure at this stage if this is hardware or software related, or how widespread it is (I think two possibly three owners have reported such behaviour).

My N800 has so far (1 week, touch wood...) performed great - no reboots, screen is excellent. But then my 770 has performed like a champ since I bought it Nov 2005. Seems like there's bound to be a few bad apples in every batch, I've managed to avoid them - lets hope Nokia keep them to a minimum.

I'm not sure if a true WSOD means a bricked unit but the very first time I powered up my N800 it sat at a white screen for minutes before I figured it was obvious that it wasn't going to boot. The only thing I could do was remove the battery, place it back and try to power it up again. This worked.

I've had it about a week since and it happened one more time, yesterday, after I flashed to the latest firmware. When it restarted after the flash, it hung at a white screen. I had to remove the battery again, etc. and it has been ok since.

Do you think I have a definite hardware problem?

Not necessarily. This seems to be fairly common (I've experienced it a few times). Not sure where the root cause exists but it doesn't *seem* fatal.

Did anyone actually QA these products? I work as an electronics engineer building networking hardware and some of the problems I've read about on both the 770 and N800 really make me wonder about Nokia's QA testing procedures. Somethings I can understand may get past the front door, but then there are other problems that really make me wonder about Nokia's products.

I remember my hardware days when I was a senior engineering technician with R&D, @ Maxtor: companies @ least American companies rarely do full QAs anymore. It seems that they believe the cost of paying trained technical people is "prohibitive" and hence will do sample testing of build lots, say 10 percent of a month's or a week's manufactuting run. The days of those "QA by" stamps are for the most part gone.
