I seriously doubt he'll want to part with it after just getting it! You'll probably have to wait until he gets PR1.3 going, then he'll be done with his PR1.2 and can sell it on ebay.

Nokia N900 PR1.2 will be the last firmware for N900 in Maemo

Although as a N900 customer I think it will be important to have Meego officially supported by Nokia, this possibility is almost impossible due to simply legal issues.

If a company like Nokia sells a device like the N900 with Maemo 5, it could not obligate any customer to "migrate to Meego or I won't support you anymore if you keep Maemo 5". There will always be users who prefer Maemo interface or have an important application which wouldn't work on Meego for example. And most countries have strict laws to defend customers right, obligating the supplier to keep the HW & SW support ongoing by a minimum period of time (not forever, sure...).

If the law and N900 warranty terms allow for that to happen, then the rational decision for Nokia would be to incentive everyone going to Meego, after all it is simpler to support one less O.S.
