I've just tried adding extras-testing using http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing / fremantle / free nonfree
and am getting an error:

http://repository.maemo.org/extras-t...mantle/Release
Unable to find expected entry nonfree/binary-armel/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)

Any issue with repos currently?

Ok user error. I'd missed out the "-" in "non-free" ;-)
