I do not usually try to defend big companies. But have any of you asking for Flash 9 even tried to reflect if it's technically possible ? Is Flash 9 for PC even possible to run on a slimmed down PDA like device ?

Take a look at these links on system requirements for Flash 9, 8 & 7:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashp...fo/systemreqs/
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashp.../flashplayer8/
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashp.../flashplayer7/

Note that for 7 it does not list any CPU or memory requirement. For 8 & 9 it has a minimum of 128MB of RAM, and 450Mhz Pentium II. Actually for 9 it lists Linux as require 512MB RAM and 128MB Graphics RAM & the CPU as 800Mhz or faster.

I am not an expert especially on Flash technology, so this is only a reflection from my general computer knowledge.

My thinking is this. Flash has probably developed from 7 to 8 & 9 to include more advanced possibilities in its JIT language. In league with the general development for more powerful Desktop PCs. Meaning, it requires more power/features/RAM to actually perform all features of the 8 & 9 Flash JIT language.

So even if Flash 9 has been released for Linux it is not a given that it scales down to the hardware the N800 represents. Some other links I saw by Adobe on mobile & Flash:
http://www.adobe.com/mobile/supported_devices/
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer_pocketpc/
It only mentions Flash Lite and Flash Player 7 in PDA/mobile context. Nothing newer.

PDA/N800 devices of today might never be powerful enough to run Flash 8 & 9. It could be that Adobe/Opera and/or Nokia optimizes some engine for 8 or 9 that actually manages to run on N800, I do not know.

What would settle this would be a statement from a person with deep knowledge of how Flash 8 & 9 JIT language is build, and what requirements it really has on memory/hardware. Then one could see what kind of devices it could be implemented on. I say: could, because it would probably involve more than a recompile, would need optimizing for specific CPU/instruction set/hardware.

So, instead of just demanding Flash 8 & 9, lets look at if its technically possible. And rather get a statement from Nokia/Adobe or Opera on that, and if there is any plan to make this happen in the future.

Just my 0.05€

Well, I guess we should abandon flash altogether then. So I guess what's left is Java. Any ideas on the reason that's delayed? That's it, I'm done beating the "where's the flash update?" discussion like a dead horse, but for "Internet Tablets" the 770 and N800 sure are lacking in some critical "Internet" standards support.

I have no big beef with this device becoming more of a mobile computer (that also does well for web browsing), but perhaps Nokia jumped the gun in the name of this thing. It's going to cause a bit of consumer confusion when you try to sell them a mobile device that's not a phone, has pretty excellent networking capabilities, and is called an Internet Tablet...but there's no Java support built-in and Flash is as crippled as Tiny Tim.
