I still need the output of the apt-get policy lines to make heads or tails out of this Also, maybe even more useful:

dpkg -l | grep qt4

Pull up the symbol keys window -- hit Fn then Ctrl on the HW keyboard. For me the pipe is on the upper-right corner.

Hrm, it seems your Nokia repository is disabled (or maybe just failed to update) ? Check if you have not disabled it by accident. For comparison, see what policy returns on my N900:

libqt4-core:
Installed: 4.5.3~git20090723-0maemo6+0m5
Candidate: 4.5.3~git20090723-0maemo6+0m5
Version table:
*** 4.5.3~git20090723-0maemo6+0m5 0
500 https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com ./ Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

EDIT: bolded the all-important difference

Thats odd as I have never touched it and it is set OK.

I have decided to kill two birds with one stone and flashed the firmware from UK to Global and PyQT4 has installed straight away with no problems.

Many thanks for all of your help.
