Has anyone managed to keep excitment under control and look up this fact before installing any applications? After installing one small (proably non-optified) package df returned 68% for rootfs. Is it normal to have so little free rootfs space from the outset?

For the record, I would really rather not reflash just to know this fact =).

65% is the number several people have posted - I've not checked this myself, but it sounds about right.

Do you know of any good (short) article/reference that explains why rootfs must be so small with a 32GB SSD? I'm puzzled...

Because rootfs isn't on the 32GB SSD, it's on a separate 256MB OneNAND chip, hardwired onto the processor. It's only 256MB because this was the largest that TI were offering at the time (even now they're not a lot larger). It's used in preference to the 32GB SSD because it's a lot quicker (see http://wiki.maemo.org/Opt_Problem for a general breakdown, with some transfer speed details for both the OneNAND and eMMC).
