Just got my n900, therefore to say Hi to everyone here. I also hope someone could answer my question regarding to firmware updates. After I got the n900, I went to App manager and updated the two updates without looking into the "details" of the updates, now I would like to know what I have updated and if it is from Nokia??? I mean Maemo 5 is open source, right? is it difficult for someone to modified the firmware, and push out a image with virus or malware in there? I know this question may sound silly, but I really concern about it. Any comments are welcome.

Many thanks

As long as you only use default repos you are fine. Everything in them go through a lot of testing. Also when you hit details it tells you what repo the update or install is coming from so you an make sure its coming from software update repo.

Thanks andrewfblack, however I have already updated these firmware, is there a way to check it now? Went to the App Manager, select "Maemo 5", it only tells me version number and Maintainer: Nokia, and I can't uninstall the updates. And the log is empty as well, I am sure there is a way to check where these updates come from, isn't it?

Many thanks

If the updates came through one of the pre-defined repositories then you're perfectly safe. Everything going onto those repositories is rigorously checked. If you've added extra repositories then there could, potentially, be issues though.

Anyway, you can read http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware for details of downloading and flashing the firmware.

Go to Settings and the About Product, if the Version is: 2.2009.51-x.xxx.x then you are on the latest firmware.

The key is 2009.51.

Thanks Rob1n, I wonder if there is a way now to double-check the source of the updates(without flashing it back to original firmware)? I can't remember if there was any extra repositories. Many thanks again.

I am thinking about one way to be sure is to flash it back to factory firmware, and update from there. I would if firmwares in http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php are tested and safe to use? thanks

Not that I know of, no - there's nothing in the packages themselves to say which repository they came from.
