sorry for my question but its better to know before doing anything wrong and regret.
when i reflash i only do this :
Download the Flasher for your device model: N900, N810, N800 or 770
In the same directory, download the latest firmware image for your device model:
for N900
Ensure the battery is fully charged.
Unplug the charger and switch off the device.
Connect the device to the computer via USB without turning it on.
or i have to do these also:
In order to flash directly from the XP/Vista/Windows 7 command line, follow these steps:
Download and install the latest version of Flasher e.g. maemo_flasher-3.5_2.5.2.2.exe
Download the latest firmware (.bin) file and save it to %ProgramFiles%\maemo\flasher-3.5\ (the default installation path for Flasher) or to the custom path of your choice.
Ensure the battery is at least half full.
Unplug charger cable and switch off the device.
Open the Command Prompt (Start then Run or Windows Logo key + R) and type cmd then press Enter.
Change the directory to the Flasher's path (TIP: Use the TAB key to auto-complete the commands and file-names)
cd "%ProgramFiles%\maemo\flasher-3.5" Hold the u key on the keyboard and connect the USB cable at the same time (details on the wiki)
Run the following command:
flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_2.2009.51-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -RReplace RX-51_2009SE_2.2009.51-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin with the firmware you wish to update.
The update will take approximately 4 minutes after which the N900 will reboot and display the Welcome Screen with Regional settings

Hi all. I have been following these instructions but all thats happening is that a solid orange light comes on. Really frustrated now as i've been at it for 2 hours. Phone was perfect for 7 weeks until that last update. I have been able to put it into r&d mode . Any help would be much appreciated . I'm not familiar with code etc . so i suppose it could be my typing. when i hit enter the terminal box goes back to the command line. I'm on windows 7 with a charged battery. Regards Rory j

Can you post a screenshot of the terminal window after you've pressed enter?

Got it sorted. May have been typing errors in windows7 but . I had an old xp machine and i ran systen recovery on it , then updated to sp3, downloaded the flasher and the .bin and after a few typo's , it flashed perfectly. Should i also have flashed the emmc while I was at it.
Ps: I was able to charge the battery in my old n95 8g. the pins line up and with a little force slot into place.

Now following this guide:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware
Just waiting for the UK Variant firmware to download! hope it works!
[Edit] PS. just connected the N900 whilst it was switched off, and my PC has recognised it and allowing me to see/use the mass storage. So I'm gonna copy everything off it whilst my download takes place! Thanks for the suggestion.
[Edit2] Flashing now - hope this fixes it!
