I had google maps with GPS that worked flawlessly on my E71. What is the similar replacement on N900?
Install the geolocation app from extras, hit the google maps mobile site, use as well as any google maps I have used. Use cursor in microb to move the map around.

So this solution works as well as a native Google Maps application (such as for the iphone or Android)???
I'm familiar with both, and using Google Maps in a browser on the N900 feels like more of a bad hack than anything else.
Not going into deeper technical stuff but I think there might be some chances of getting the "big screen Maemo" experience with some MacGyver talents and following set-up:
* Video from N900 to screen via TV-out (ofcourse that's a given)
* Touch screen --> input to N900 via bluetooth (kinda like BlueMaemo app reversed. Bluetooth HID feeding the N900 same data as the touch screen on the device it self. There might even be some help from the Blue maemo developer if asked nicely.)
I admit this is as easily said than done but it should be doable for someone with enough skills and time.

Over and out...
well my idea worked and looks very cool but its laggy. if i could hock it up using the TV out and have bluetooth input that would be mad. is there an app for it??? i could test it out now and upload video
this idea can go furture then just the OVI maps idea. think about the multimedia. would be the best head unit ever
Nods yes that was sort of my point.
The moniter and TV out ideas have a few negatives in my mind. One they must be connected via a cable.
The idea I have would allow me to sit in the car and the display would connect automatically. Much like my bluetooth handsfree used to. Mid conversation.
If we can get it touch screen then it would be a superior hands free as well. Wired into the car audio it would be able to stream A2DP and give us a controller for selecting media contacts to call etc. With a large driving friendly control.
The concept of a large touchscreen that auto connects also has applications as a household meadea center. Get home plug your N900 in to charge go to the stereo and the screen will already be connected. Audio can be set to connect automatically or when selected so it could be used as a hand free phone in the house or just a nice media control center.
The options are really endless.
The display side of it is fairly easy. Any laptop or netbook could do it boot of a small flash and use a display porting program. But others may think of better ways
But I have no idea about touchscreen. Are there simple ways to add one to a existing display. How would I port that to the N900 via BlueTooth.

Etc etc.
very very easy to add a touchscreen to my Lenovo S10 or eeePC. maybe my idea is better since its all wireless. just need to figure out a more smooth and less laggy approach. been wanting to do this for agesss
by the way ive almost finished mounting the touch screen in my car. even got a car charger, fast start up and all the extras and tweaking done. now just need to wirelessly hock up my n900 which ive done but faster and automated. i would settle for the cable though and the blue tooth idea. im gonna think about it and get back to you guys. hopeful have a solution soon and ill write a tutorial on how i did it.
I have the same question as others. Using N900 as a reliable gps navigator has been very questionable. I have tried the google maps and it cannot continuously receive the gps info. The map is also very lagging.. maep is very premature. Ovi maps .. lets not get into a discussion on Nokia's contribution toward that.
Is there any reliable and usable gps navigator app? Other than geotagging for pictures, my phone's current gps functionality is worthless.

but its specific to each laptop. it takes about 2 hours to do heaps of online tuts and youtube videos. if you want to do one PM me and ill help if you need it. converting it to a tablet was my custom job lol endid up being a little thicker then the n900. by the way i got the laptop for free. they are very cheap just get an old s10 or old eeepc
