Also as an alternative solution entirely look at an Archos 5 internet tablet running Androd which is the closest current offering to a traditional NIT, and has an optional GPS module.
Something I played with a while ago, although I have now progressed onto a N800 and N810. Of course the N810 has proper GPS Sat-nav software on it.

The real point here is that the devices themselves are perfectly functional as they are and don't rule out the N900 as a display - just move it a bit closer to you!! Fitting an extra screen means all sorts of crap with touch screens etc. keep it simple.
im trying to do it the cheap way. lot of work i admit but think of the potential and jealousy this will cause if something is wiped up properly!! lol i only converted my S10 to a touch screen tablet so i can have a massive 10.1" head unit i can fully custom make to my liking. you could just get a ready done smaller unit, but i want a CAR PC.
i think im going to use the TV out cable to the screen and to the amp. the points touched on the screen will send the coordinates to the N900 through blue-tooth. or if i can fined a better and faster wireless option that would be more favorable. ill speak to my friend tomorrow and see if he can write an app up for me. how exciting. this is ssoo doableeeeeee. not that hard once its figured out
Is there an RDP server for N900? There's quite a few posts that seem to talk about a client, but I can't find anything about a server app. If I understand it correctly, RDP will send audio as well as video, which is an improvement over VNC.

that sounds like a better option. VNC is terrible but it give a good idea on how it will work which looks amazing on a big screen.
Yes, I'm also very interested in such solutions and I was writing about it in the past: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=42526
I also think RDP server can be the solution.
Looks like there's an XRDP project that could be ported, but it hasn't been updated since 2007. Seems like it used a lot of x11vnc. Also doesn't seem like it supported audio, but that may be worked around via PulseAudio?
The simplest option would be to use the TV out capability of the N900. Not sure how cheap you can get an LCD TV with composite input though.
you could maybe get a TV which accepts a SCART interface and that one has composite and S-Video.
I don't know if the SCART interface is used worldwide, I'm from europe and this is the way I TV-out to my TV .. so maybe he can TV-out his maps on a tv.
