Where are you trying to install from?
There's a single-click install link for mplayer on this page that I think is still valid.
Both of those should be in the standard extras repository, so would be visible in application manager, or from the maemo downloads page.

You should only install applications from the Applciation Manager, or apps downloaded from the OS2008 section in the Downloads area on maemo.org. It sounds like you have downloaded a general linux package for mplayer which will not work on the Tablets, as the version of mplayer for them is heavily customised and optimised.

As for your 2GB internal card. I assume you cannot see it in file manager (utilities menu). It would show up as "internal memory card". May be worth searching the forums on how to re-format the card.

It may be advantagous/necessary to re-flash your tablet (which a similar concept to re-installing Windows) This will get you back to a known working baseline.

As for booting from card, unless you really need the space to install lots of apps (games usually) then I'd suggest not to.

I have been using N800 and N810 for well over 2 years, and not had to.

Lastly, welcome to the forums. You have come to the right place for help, advice etc, and enjoy the tablets. They are great devices

If the internal mmc is corrupt, I would try format it from file manager.
