Anyone try using "Anki" for the N900? It's a good app for learning a language via flashcards...using it for Chinese on my primary PC. I'm not sure if it would work on the fremantle so I'm wondering if any experts out there know if the libs, debs, or whatever would conflict or otherwise cause harm to my device if I tried to install it.

I'm actually developing my own flashcard app for N900. It's mainly as a way for me to learn the C++/Qt environment together with the desire to learn Chinese. I haven't uploaded it to any of the repositories yet as I'm working on polishing the UI just a little bit more. At the moment, it can't load flashcards from any existin files you may have, but that's mainly because I don't know of any that would be of general use. Maybe you can share some file with me? I could send you the .deb file if you want to be the very first alpha-tester...

apparently there are two packages in extras-devel for it (ankimaemi and ankiqt) and I understand that maemi is the smaller version made for just reviewing cards while the qt version is the full-blown app ported.

unfortunately the qt version just crashes on the n900 while the maemi opens but thats about it. the menu system won't let you open or do anything else. ?? I'm guessing it's not ready for OS2008, only Diablo?

great news. I've tried the "wordbyword" vocabulary app and it has a great GUI but it's a bit of a hassle adding flashcards.
The GREAT thing about Anki is that there are already decks online for it. I'm hoping it will get more attention.

edit: I don't really know what I could share with you :/
what kind of files - I just download decks for Anki. maybe look into that? I'd love to try it out, can you post the deb here?

@hrz: there are two other flshcard apps available for the n900,
anki also didnt worked for me.

fullrecall: in my opinion this is the most complete one. it
follows a very basic xml/txt description for imports from file.
changing the gui font makes it also finger friendly. you can
include pics, sounds and even external movie files etc

mnemosyne: though there is no port for the n900 yet the older
version works quite well. makes use of sqlite for holding the
data.

Please find the deb attached.

To install, simply copy the .deb file to the device. From the File Manager on the device, click the file and the Application Manager should do the rest.

Features:

The only flashcards available are the 2500 most common simplified Chinese characters. This is known as 'Course 1' in the Settings screen. At the moment, you will be presented the Chinese character and they you can guess the pinyin/English translation.
Each chapter contains 20 characters. 'Chapter 1' includes the most common characters and so on.

There are a number of known issues. The main ones in descending order of importance:
  1. It seems that the database is read-only by default when installing the package. It will work anyway, it's just that the application will not be able to know you are improving. You can open an X-terminal windows and chmod 664 the file in /home/user/qteachme.db. You probably have to be root to do this.
  2. When you get into the settings window, you must select a Chapter. If none is selected, the application will exit.
  3. The application sometimes exits all by itself. I haven't identified the pattern for this yet. Sometimes it happens within a minute or so of usage, sometimes it doesn't happen at all.
  4. All options are not visible in the 'Settings' screen as I haven't figured out how to get scrolling to work there...
  5. The application icon will only be the correct one after a re-boot of the device.
  6. 'Load Database' doesn't do anything.

Please, treat this as anything you would find in extras-devel.

I would love to get Anki working on the n900, but unfortunately I get the same thing that everyone else has experienced. I am forced to use the web version for now...

Feel free to try out Qteachme from the extras-devel repository. It is not Anki, but it should be able to load Anki files (if it doesn't, let me know).

Anyway, I don't want to hijack this thread any further, so please post any questions, issues, suggestions, complaints, praise, ... on Qteachme on its own thread. It is actively supported at the moment, so I will listen to feedback.

Can you use pre-made decks on the web version?? I tried running it but it keeps telling me to Add Cards, there's no option to use the downloadable cards on the web version?

This app would be perfect on Maemo 5, really hope someone out there is working on it.

yes you can. you have to use the desktop version though. from the desktop version download the deck, save it, and then sync it online.
