    does she need video call??
if YES, then AVOID the disaster of getting another one...

most ppl are telling u to get her an iphone.. why??
most ppl here know this phone is Unfinished... its for app developers, linux masters, and most importantly, for people who carry a charger in their back pocket when they r out for the day...

dont forget, DO YOUR RESEARCH before u buy another one... Because u get penalised for not doing research. lol

    1) It does its best, its not Nokia's fault the BBC do not detect the N900 and serve it appropriately encoded files. In fact, its Adobe at fault for making Flash so **** it can't handle iPlayer when the N900 itself is perfectly capable. Fortunately Flash 10.1 should finally fix that, well it bloody better do or Adobe are going to get huge backlash.

Oh and of course, the iPhone/iPod/iPad can't play Flash in the browser at all. So the ONLY hope they have of iPlayer is if the BBC write an app for it (which granted, iPlayer is more suitable to a dedicated application than web-based anyway, I certainly find YouTube far easier on my iPod than the N900). Annoyingly, they will write such an App, because the BBC are experts at wasting money. Maybe we will get lucky and they write it in Qt so it can port over to Symbian, Maemo and Meego, but I wont hold my breath.

    2) It does do extraordinary multitasking, but if you think that means glitchless multitasking then you are living in cloud cuckoo land. The nature of multitasking is that glitches happen, there is a lot going on to make it work and how much junk you have installed, how recently you rebooted, etc will all have their effect. If multitasking was a walk in the park then the iPhone would have supported it since day one, but Apple went for glitchless performance over functionality, you could say the N900 is the polar opposite of the iPhone.

    3) The sheer fact that searching for Bluetooth in App Manager brings up a list of applications, only a few of which mention bluetooth in their description, should be a clear indication its not perfect. If a search term is there to be matched it should clearly be in the description.

What annoys me the most is when you tap an application that is from anything other than the main repos, you get the "this application is not from Nokia, blah blah" notice. To get the description you then have to press Details, then Description, if it even has one which plenty of stuff does not.

When I tap an application to install I expect the first thing I am shown to be the description with details of which repository that package is coming from at the bottom, so I can make an informed decision there and then if I want to proceed or not.

It would also be easier to have pages rather than a scrollable list. Scrollable list is nice, for portrait use, but we are in landscape so its easier to slide sideways than up/down - at least give us a choice. Often I have accidentally selected a package because I am trying to scroll slowly and there simply is not enough space to move slowly up/down. If it was pages I could even use the keyboard to move back/forwards.

That's not really fair to say, because the N900 is a perfectly good phone. You can make and receive calls, nuff said. Now if you want custom ringtones per person, voice calling, other functionality the N900 does not have, then fair enough. But saying the N900 is useless as a phone is pure BS, it works perfectly well for me as I never used any of those features anyway.

Hey, Underworld, why spout BS about carrying a charger? Can you show one message anywhere where someone says carry a charger? Perhaps you are reading-impaired -- some people suggest you carry a spare battery.

Edit: And by the way, what good would it do to carry a charger anyway? it wouldn't help if you weren't in range of an outlet; but if you were in range of an outlet, you could plug your N900 in if you needed power. I just carry a spare battery; my charger stays home.

I'm sure they meant charger/battery, as they would both effectively be for the same reason.

I really should consider getting a spare battery. I bought the Energizer AA to Nokia adapter which did seem to help prelong the battery (though not enough to actually stop it draining with FM Transmitter on while streaming Internet Radio on the motorway, an extreme test I think), but the clip holding the batteries in broke the first time I actually left the house with it. Shoddy design.

    1. Go to X-Term, become root
    2. execute

That's a bit unfair. It's like accusing the "Adobe" in "Adobe Photoshop" of being unclear and mysterious.

Anyways, back to the OP... it's been well established that the N900 is by and large a phone/tablet/PDA/etc. for folks who want to do their own polishing. It's like buying unfinished furniture - if you don't know how to do finishes it's extremely inconvenient, but if you do then you've got a lot more options w/r/t how the furniture looks and thus how it'll fit into your house and et cetera.

So, the implied question - should this guy's GF get a N900? That depends on whether or not she's willing to take those extra steps... or if he's willing to do them for her.
