Thanks for posting the brainstorm link. I had thought that it might have been mentioned earlier had that been the case.
I have tried to answer posts directly but as I am using the N900 itself to post it isn't always easy to cut and paste between posts. Traffic at a higher rate sometimes overlaps and I am not the most dominent poster here, I believe there are others too.
Conversations.Nokia and a few other press releases at the time.
The survey carried out was not an internal one but conducted by a professional research company over 5 european cities.
0.04 inches..... wow. They really embraced landscape there. point taken.
still no links about the other credible research. Just your brief words.
but so you say. thus it is true.
Honestly. I'm beginning to see a pattern, where you're latching on minor details and ignoring the major points, that not just me, many have made about the importance of portrait. simply to prolong the argument.
If you are as mature as you claim, and satisfied with Landscape operations, why not just leave the "whiners" alone? let them "whine". maybe they'll be heard. probably not. but you're satisfied with landscape. why do you care?
I'm going to be the bigger person. And end this. This is my final post in this thread.
No Portrait is a big one. The next OS release will have it. That is the single most valuable evidence of its importance.
lol lets start a meego thread and watch them politely flame each other into oblivion! *joke joke!*
anyway... at the risk of provoking further discussion - i've realised the phone dialer has portrait mode, already has lettered numbers (why?) a small (yet big enough!) input space, and a drop-down for call type... now i aint no dev, but theoretically, even ignoring t9 support for now, just how hard would it be to plug in some kind of "quick sms" to that drop-down and utilise the letters? just a thought...
Our own company usage studies actually showed that greater than 63% of such users found the menus being portrait orientated annoying.
I suppose our company meaning Nokia? Then why for god's sakes is the S60v5 (at least on the 5800 and OMNIA HD) menu only portrait. This is annoying. Having to turn the phone around all the time.

Would it be handy sometimes send SMS's in portrait mode? HELL YES, specially when you can't hold the device with both hands.
Is it an outrageous proposition? no, it's NOT. You're all right about the N900 being a tablet not a phone, OK, but it has the ability to make phone calls and someone at Nokia thought it it would be USEFUL (and it makes sense) allow the phone funcionality to work in portrait mode.
So, if it's something software based, why is so hard to aply the same logic to the SMS's?.
It's something impossible for Nokia to do? No, it's not, it even WORKS with a Bug that allow you to use the phone on portrait, there are only a few changes needed.
Should this (portrait) be an option? YES, and those who hate it, disable it and keep using the device with both hands, and everybody happy.
