I think there is a point to this article.

Multitasking to expedite the time to switch between non active\idle applications is an unnecessary resource hog (ram, swap file, cpu) if you can figure out a way to launch/close the apps in a similar amount of time;

'True' use of multitasking (in the mobile context), imho, is to run a service that needs to maintain background connection: downloader, streaming media, navigation system, continuous calculation, etc.

A big difference between the necessity to implement multitasking on a desktop system and a mobile one is in their screen size. When you can only display one (optimized) application at a time, then you lose the requirement of looking at 2 (or more) apps running together side by side.

Hell desktop multitasking is mostly a myth. On Windows, anyway.

Heck my Treo 650 could play music while I surf. My Treo 180 even had a proof-of-concept app installed that would play jittery music while surfing, if you could cram a significantly long WAV file into the device memory on top of all your apps and files
