yes you can. but in this version the wifi is not working properly.
just wait a bit, because the new 5-3 version is on it's way,
and i think a post from steve will arrive very soon about this new and improved version...

Yes it's true you don't need RnD mode anymore with the new rootfs 0.0.5-1, but this build the wifi is broken and there will be a new rootfs soon where thats fixed. If you want to try it out anyways just follow this link:

But first you have to disable RnD mode. You have to flash this code to your N900. It's the same way as flashing the zImage just with this code instead Code is in link bellow:

Can you add the g_ether module to the android kernel modules ?

With this module missing, the usb networking is not working in maemo mode.

And this is annoying when a windows desktop only is available.
