Sure, it's occasionally handy to be able to make a phone call while out and about, but it's the pocketable, touchscreen, and Linux aspects that are useful every day.
Ah, I forgot about that too. I would be carrying my n800 along with the Droid.

I'd probably still be on the loaner MotoMing A1200 I had. Possibly I would have moved on to a Nexus One, but the lack of a hardware keyboard would probably have kept me away.

The Milestone would likely have been my dream phone, but US carrier and vendor f*cking stupidity makes them unavailable in the US without paying jacked up prices. That and IIRC, the Milestone only booted signed kernels and filesystems (until recently?)

I'd still be using my Treo 650. If push came to shove I might have hooked up a GSM modem to a Sony Vaio UX-series or some similar open handheld PC.

<RANT>We might have got a PIM, and decent media player etc built in to the N810 as a decent software update instead of been made to feel like last week's bread.</RANT>

I'd still be using this

Seriously, 5 days ago: that was my phone, the N900 is the first smartphone that ever got me excited. I bought one last week, against all warnings that it lacks some features, that it is going to be replaced by Meego based phones, that it is blablabla...

I just thought: You always wanted your Open, powerfull, preferably Linux based phone? Well, here it is! Take your chance! So, I jumped on the bandwagon, now that it is still here. I love that it is Open, I love that it is Debian based, I love that it is powerfull, I love that I can program Python in it, I love that it has a proper browser, I love that it comes with a terminal, I love that it has GPS, WIFI, FM, 2G, 3G, touchscreen, keyboard, 5MP camera, ...

€600 too much? I did the math: I only ever bought 2 phones in my whole life, the one above and before that, you guessed it, this one. So, unlike most of my friends, I hadn't really spend any serious money on phones yet. I was also in need of a MP3 player, a camera, a car gps and a replacement for my beaten down, inherited from my dad, iPaq PDA. Buy all of those separately (and account for a mediocre new phone every year) and you end up spending a lot more than €600. And you will never carry all those devices at the same time, thus always missing the one you need at that crucial moment.

I see myself using this device for a long time (2+ years) to come, just like there are people here who are still using their N7XX and N8XX tablets. And if the N900 gets Meego, even longer still (though I will hate RPM with all my heart).

EDIT:
Ooh, and I love the way it looks! Plain and simple! Used it this weekend to shoot video: teens were saying 'what a funny camera'
