Hello guys,

I am really new to Linux and I am struggling to action some of these steps to activate voice navigation on my n900.

Firstly, I can't find flite on extra devel.

Secondly, could someone please give me a step by step guide on installing the voice navigation.

Thirdly, the impression I am getting from the threads is that both flite and eSpeak need to be installed. Is this the case or can one work in place of the other.

Lastly, is eSpeak the same as eSpeak GUI Client or is it eSpeak - Extra Russian and Chinese Dictionaries?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry. Never used flite, so can't help there.

Read the second box of code on the first post. Again, no experience with flite, so can't help much. (If you're talking about actual voices, the developer's working on that. Several languages have been submitted by community members.)

The OP seems to point at tricking Mappero into using eSpeak instead of flite. (Putting the eSpeak command into the flite execution.)

eSpeak alone is a command line application. eSpeak GUI is just what it's name says; a GUI for using eSpeak (and so eSpeak also gets installed). The Russian and Chinese dictionaries just provide more things that eSpeak can say, so again, eSpeak is installed as well.

Hope this helps.

As of the last couple versions it no longer uses flite or eSpeak. It's using it's own internal files. I've asked the developer to re-enable the option for eSpeak/flite, since it's more verbose. Hopefully that will re-appear as an option again.

flite is in the devel repositories, but it's CLI, so it won't show in the App Manager. You'd have to install it by hand with apt-get. Since flite is also busted on the N900 (it's a port from the N800, but audio out is slightly different), I'd advise skipping it.
