It might sound like I'm asing a noob question but I'm not - I can't install build-essential and do the usual configure/make/install routine because of this:
I've even tried downloading the .debs and installing "from the bottom up" but there are circular dependencies so it's totally impossible to install the build-essential packages.
So how else can I compile things for my Easy Debian install? I have x86-64 Linux and Windows PCs at my disposal but no ARM machines apart from the N900.

OK I got an idea: I can use qemu on a PC to run another ARM linux distro that doesn't have this problem - maybe Ubuntu ARM - compile what I want on there, and then transplant the apps into my Easy Debian install.
