Obviously they can, technically. Nokia has just chosen a stricter policy... and once the "cat is out of the bag" as it is now, it's more a question of should. I'd say most people should not.

But asking about Nokia policy here is largely rhetorical unless Quim Gil or someone in a similar capacity responds.

I don't want to jump on it early because my N900 is my primary phone. I sure wish some brave early updater uploads some more screenshots and a detailed analysis of new features...
