There's a bug with OVI maps that the app shuts down the GPS before it can get a lock most times without a data signal. One work around is to open the camera app (or any app that enables GPS) and let it wait to get a lock, then open OVI maps once you already have a lock.
Though honestly, I much prefer the Maemo Mapper app, since it doesn't have this GPS bug, and allows me to store/save points and paths. Also, with a little work, you can get turn-by-turn voice instructions out of Mapper if you have flite installed and apply a small hack to it to make it work.
