@abill_uk yes I have been to china and seen the fakes and i also regularly look at the KIRFs on Engadget and eBay (it's an obsession/fascination).

There are no fakes as good as that one in the picture. You can tell by the screen resolution for a start. If it is a fake then it's probably made with identical hardware and it's good enough to run the standard Maemo 5 OS. I.e. a really interesting device! An 'N900' not made by Nokia.

People have linked in this thread to the clones - and you can tell as they are shat (no wifi, 320x240 screen, etc). The Chinese clones are usually for the internal market where they just want cheap devices.

One thing that did strike me when I was in china was that most of the locals weren't interested at all in the fakes. They haven't had years of branding, and so had no interest in the faux-lexs, prada bags, etc. I think the copiers copy western phone designs as it's easier than thinking up their own ideas!

Seems genuine to me.

The fakes I have seen:
- mostly do not have double flash
- have a completely different camera.
- mostly have keyboards with a different font.
- do not have the blue paint inside the camera cover.
- look really cheap

Yes you know as much as i do as i also found the same in HK but this guy has not even got his from the seller yet so is not possible to find out anything right now but you must admit the menu is just not standard and no way has office or the system icon lol so i can only hope being from ebay as he is protected anyhow that it is in fact real.
Incidently i did talk to one guy selling fake N900's and i asked him if he thought he would sell many and his reply was "when we get the menu sorted out more like the real one we should sell loads"
so based on that alone is enough to make me wonder lol.
Incidently i did find the place to be absolutly flooded with copies of most Nokia phones not just N900's and i dare anyone to try tell the difference just looking at them lol.

Some ppl here just consistently get behind the wrong things that you can use them as safe indicator of what something is when he say it isn't...

looks real to me too

maybe I am being stupid but the transparency on the fullscreen icon on MicroB is too much of a detail to fake out. Even first S60v5 firmwares (early 5800xm) didn't have transparency for the fullscreen icon.

May i suggest a trip to China as you will be rather shocked at the work being turned out nowerdays because of anything they can look even better than the real article, i know the fake N900's i seen were in fact very polished in my opinion making me wonder to myself oh why cant Nokia make em like that lol.
The keyboard by the way IS identical as is the rest of the case on the copies.

The chinese are able to copy the physical atributes of phones rather well due to them having the factories used to make most of the original models. So it is not to difficult to reverse cast the molds. Hence physically they can be quite acurate. However the OS is another thing entirely. They get close but usually take about 8 months or so do they get there. and mostly by skinning already used os that they have available. The best I have seen are copies of the android os and you can still tell they use lower resolution screens. Since that is one of the largest cost assosiated with making a cell phone.
