ssh can do DNS requests in principle, but whether or not they are used depends on the client. Generally SOCKS 5 = DNS proxying and SOCKS 4 or 4a cannot proxy DNS requests. I don't know which the n900 would use, in fact I can't see an option to use a socks proxy.
