Does anyone know if there is a key mapper (shortcut) app which will let you map a button combination to fire up an application. As I sometime find it annoying to search through the list and the homepage is full up of the widgets that you can't create desktop shortcuts

Yes there is such a thing call simple-launcher by Michail Sobolev. Do a search for simple-launcher.
