Hey guys. Next week I'll be in the Los Angeles area and would like to use my N900 with a local carrier using a data plan. I would like to know if there is a way to buy a pre-paid sim card to use on my phone, or if I rather use a prepaid roaming service (very costly) from my carrier back at home.

Any advice on this? where could I get one if possible and what would I need?

Both T-mob and AT&T have prepaid plans. Find a AT&T or T-mob store in the area of LA that you are going to be in.
T-Mob:

AT&T:

On top of that you can get prepaid phones (and possibly SIMs) at most convenience stores, like 7-Eleven, AM/PM.

Both T-mob and AT&T are going to need information from you. They are unlikely to sell you a SIM anonymously. You will have to speak w/ the carrier's representatives directly about whether data is offered on prepaid SIMs. Supposedly T-mobile does offer data for a $60 prepaid month (but it does not say that on their site in the prepaid plan section). You are usually better off finding a place that has wifi for data.

A link to a forum that asks the same question (but not using the N900 specificly):

Please follow up here w/ your experience. I am sure that plenty of N900 people would like to know the same thing when traveling w/in the US.

Sorry, but this isn't an answer, I'm jumping on board with your question.

I'll be in San Francisco in a few weeks, so...... same question really
