Hey guys

Just saw that this beautiful game, Frogatto, was released not long ago, with source, which just makes it ripe for porting

Yeah, this would be pretty cool for the N900, at least the graphics look pretty good. And on top of that it's made by Apple and sold for iPhone for $4,99! And we could get it for free! Wow, then this would already be second game we get for free but the iPhone users won't.

Unfortunately, only the code is licensed under GPL, while the graphics and sound resources are not. As game creators state in http://www.frogatto.com/about the reason is commercial:

Our content is not GPLed. We’re retaining all rights to the art and music, because we want complete control over where it can and can’t be sold. People have suggested a CC-Non-Commercial license for the content, but we’re not interested. That would expose us to the very real danger of someone releasing the game for free on a platform we’re trying to sell it on. Whether likely to happen or not, if it did happen, it would have a catastrophic effect on sales, so it’s too much of a risk for us.
Nevertheless, having the source code allows for mods to be freely created, i.e. derivative games with similar game mechanics but different graphics and sound.

@fgs
From what I understand they might be willing to allow redistribution of the data (they already do for any platform that isn't apple). They just don't want to allow it to be modified.

Someone on their forum seems to have been allowed to port it to Ubuntu here http://www.frogatto.com/forum/index.php?topic=20.0 through a group called Ubuntu Games http://www.ubuntugames.org.
Maybe it's just a question of a person they take serious enough, to ask them for permission to use the graphics/music/sounds on the Maemo platform.

Well, it seems that there is a port being done for pandora, maybe we could ask to get permission to use the same port for the n900?

Not needed, but perhaps you could ask pH5 if he would accept a donation.
