nope i am still unable to enter R&D mode

Try this:

1) Remove battery
2) Execute flasher on Linux
3) When states that is waiting for an USB device, connect the N900 to the computer.
4) Hold "U" Key
5) While pressing U, put the battery back.
6) See how it goes...

after what seemed like the millionth time trying to flash my n900 actually managed it!

i'm back in business. thanks to those who offered to help
