Okay so here's the problem: If my N900 is sitting on my desk or I'm using it in landscape mode and it rings, I pick it up and put it next to my head. The problem is because there's a significant delay in screen rotation, when my face triggers the proximity sensor it shuts down the screen in landscape mode, where it stays as long as the phone is next to my head. This causes 2 problems:

1. The volume controls are effectively reversed.
2. If I want to hang up the phone, I have to take it away from my head, wait for the screen to rotate into portrait mode (if I try to quickly put it horizontal I'll just get into a silly "rotation chase" that wastes even more time) And then finally press End.

Now if app rotation could occur even when the screen is off, the call app would go into portrait mode shortly after I pick it up and there would be no problem. Right now the only workaround is to lock the rotation one way or another, which comes with it's own set of problems.

Anyone know of any tricks that can achieve this?

I just leave it in permanent landscape mode. Because even if you tell the phone to stay in permanent portrait mode, it launches in landscape and has to turn to portrait. Yes.
