It hasn't happened to me yet, at least not with my N900, but this might come in handy in the future when i forget where i placed it; the idea is to monitor the mic looking for a pattern of claps (somthing like *clap*wait*clap*clap* for example), when it hears it the device will emit a loud sound and flash the LEDs and screen to help you find where it is.

It would probably need some tweakability to avoid false positives etc, the actual pattern should also be configurable to help with situations with more than one device in clapping range.

Perhaps offer the option of stopping the "Hey, i am here!" routine after N seconds and also after hearing another clap pattern (or the same one again), with those options disabled the only way to stop it would be somthing like how you can stop alarms with buttons on the screen.

Would it be possible to make somthing like this without adding significant drain to the battery? I mean while it is waiting to hear the pattern, of course it would drain the battery when making loud sounds, vibrating etc.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just call the phone?

Only if you got another phone and the N900 got signal, also i've read some people use the N900 without a SIM card

that would be quite a drain on the battery to constantly sample for audio input.
