Sorry for starting a new thread, but I've been looking around in other threads for a similar problem to mine but i'm unable to find a situation that's entirely similar.

I got my n800 about a week ago, and so far I've loved it, use it to hop on free wifi wherever I go. haven't had any problems, EXCEPT for when I try to connect to my company's public wireless system.(no encryption, just get on, accept a certificate, and log in to a webpage) The device sees the network and I'm able to select it, but I seem to be unable to connect. When I tell it to connect the little globe icon starts blinking, but keeps doing so and then times out with a message "network connection error."

Based on the other threads here I figured out how to install xterm and run ifconfig while it was attempting to connect:

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:19:4F4:F8:F1

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

now that to me seems like its just not talking at all, or am I missing something here?

Please help!

What kind of authentication is your company network using? The N800 doesn't fair too well with PEAP/EAP type authentication, there are several threads about that already and one or two possible workarounds (using a script or supplicant) but to be honest you may be out of luck. There are a couple of bugs (at least) in bugzilla about PEAP/EAP support too.

See, this is where i'm not clear, it is an open access network, so does it still use authentication protocols?

also, how would i go about finding out what protocol my network uses? Sorry, for all the questions, and I appreciate the answer milhouse, It's just that I'd like to understand better what the issue is.

Not sure, as I've never used such a network - someone with more knowledge of PEAP/EAP networks may be able to assist and it's quite possible I'm leading you up the wrong path. I'm not really sure PEAP/EAP authentication uses an automatically generated token to enhance security or if you have to enter a passphrase, but I suspect the former.

As for determining the protocol, are you able to ask the network admin or can you connect with a laptop (the laptop may identify the network properties once it is connected).

i'll have to borrow a laptop, I think. Our admins are pretty much like " if you cant connect, too bad. we don't offer support for the free wireless" . so yeah In the meantime, I will now go do research on EAP/PEAP
