Here's a link to sipdroid doing video, presumably via 3G:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlLZHCHlSY4

What's interesting is that the video frame rate is quite high! And it seems far more competent than the Qik tests that I have seen. It also supports the front/back camera feature as well.

Sipdroid is a very active project, and it's open, so it's nice to see that these features are being added, and stability is being constantly improved. It implements some nice features to provide a good usable experience (eg: default GSM over EDGE, aLaw over WiFi). Though, be warned that it may be rough around the edges as it matures!

Here's some great information on SipDroid:

    Here's the changelog:
    http://code.google.com/p/sipdroid/wiki/ChangeLog

Here's information regarding adding VoIP with Google Voice via sipdroid for free north american calls! This may be out of date so YMMV:

Here's another video of sipdroid working its magick, but this time via 4G. The picture is at least on par with a typical notebook webcam and is quite good:

Here is a comparative facetime video, and I think sipdroid's quality stacks up quite well, though the iPhone 4 likely offers the slicker, more integrated experience:

It would be interesting to see an android to handset call (ie. sipdroid to N900 or sipdroid)!

I installed sipdroid according to one of the guides (the one in Italian) and could voice phone in and out through its voip interface. So far so good. Now I have to discover how to deliver video, in particular to my n900 Meanwhile wife is bringing her Tab at work, so that I'll be able to tinker with it maybe at evening time

At least in the UK Samsung seem to be doing their best to scuttle the device: last week there was a press release (see http://androidandme.com/2010/10/phon...-november-1st/ ) but don't bother following the link at the end of the press release because they put a capital letter on Galaxytab so you'll get a 404.

If you do go to /uk/galaxytab and try to register your interest then you (or at least I) find that the Flash registration doesn't recognise a UK keyboard so you get " instead of @ when entering your email. That's easily worked around, but every such silly mistake will lose them customers.

I checked on vodafone's website and it is still on the coming soon page.

No tariffs, prices or new info and it's released in under a month!
Samsung shouldn't leave it to the networks to announce everything as vodafone aren't the most forthcoming company!

I feel that this device could have been super successful from a sales perspective but Samsung prevented that with messed up pricing and lack of release info.

It's still a little early to gauge the success of the Tab. The late-pricing details may have hurt sales, but then again, it may turn out to be a hot seller.

    Time will tell.

I think they may be depending on early adopters and well informed buyers to snag the initial batch and generate word of mouth buzz, since they don't have a captive audience (yet?) like Apple.

The timing seems about right to catch the high tide just before Christmas.

I agree. It seems Samsung has a very good strategy for market penetration that seems to have been decisively implemented so far. I would wager that their experience with consumer devices will pay off with the Tab.

Try Fring, it is in Android Market and free.

    Congrats on the purchase.
