Indeed, an HTC tablet would be very interesting and a high quality product worth consideration.

But IMO Samsung's quality in the smart-device arena is only matched by Apple (which incidentally contains many Samsung parts), so it's quite perfect that they've produced a tablet. From the capacitive touch sensors, to the sound hardware, the Tab scores top marks. Beyond simple metrics like the RAM capacity or the resolution, the Tab would surely wipe the floor with any similarly spec'd HTC device.

It seems that much of the focus of this update has been power management, though I would hope that there's more to it than that! But improved power management would be a very welcome feature.

More news should be forthcoming in the next few days.

But in terms of pure build quality the Samsung galaxy phones are really not that good. The HTC phones are built very good. Of xoursw that doesnt say much about the Tab though.

How're the Maemo folks doing with their customizations and widgets and stuff? I'm curious to know whether the groundswell is exclusive to Android.

The flagship Galaxy S (the iPhone-ish one) was supposed to have poor build quality due to the flexible-plastic back plate that didn't cling tightly to the device giving the impression of poor build. However, having personally handled a Captivate (the phone styled for Rogers), I can attest that the phone feels solid in the hand (complete with metal back). In other words, I don't believe that the Galaxy S build quality is 'bad' per-say, just the choice of a back plate on the original Galaxy S was poorly chosen.

The Tab, however has gotten very good reviews for feeling solid in the hand so build quality is not a serious concern.

I have no doubt that HTC will most certainly release a device with solid build quality all around and one that's very nice to use!

In an unrelated topic, I do hope that there's a way to switch the battery in the Tab as I wouldn't pay a company $100 to replace a $30 battery especially considering the travel or shipping delay. I'm still not a fan of sealed-in batteries.

I would imagine that Maemo is plenty customizable as well.

The Android provision to make the launcher just another app is brilliant. It offers an unlimited level of customization and greatly simplifies customization, distribution, and installation.

I'm not sure how Maemo handles customization of the launcher/task manager, but something tells me that it's more hard-coded in the UI. I could be very wrong about this.

Anyone care to add a little insight?
