Where in the world would there be contracts that state you MUST use a N900?
Am really sorry for your interpretation power.. But if you buy the N900 in a Mobile phone network contract, You do sign the papers that you will be paying the stated usage amount + N900's cost till end of it..
i may have moved to Samsung galaxy S or something, but N900 wasnt cheap and resale value now isnt good enough to go for another phone. So no option rather than wait till it becomes old enough !
And I'm still here, enjoying a mobile computer that does so much more than the competition. I'm still using the same suite of apps I settled on last year after much trial and error (Witter, eCoach, and the built-in Maemo apps). The devs have made these solid, every-day reliable, and for their efforts I'm grateful. And I rely heavily on the built-in sharing and social services of Maemo, and the overall philosophy of browser-instead-of-an-app-store works for me. PR1.3 and the new Wordpress app have been great additions to the phone as well.
Oh, and it's been dropped several times on concrete, and even once kicked to the curb by a buddy at HTC (accidentally, he said ;-). And it's still in great shape.
I'm on T-Mobile with unlimited data and messaging, and I sync everything to the cloud except local music (20gigs), pictures (8gigs including about 4000 shot w/ the N900).
I shop phones constantly and have kicked the tires (in store) on every 'big release' in the last year: HTC HD2 and HD7, MyTouch everything, T-Mobile G2, Nexus One, Samsungs, and LGs. They all require compromises of some kind that outweigh the few compromises I have to make on the N900 (mostly screen-size). From a hardware perspective, a lot of the competition one year later still can't match the N900.
It's kind of neat to re-watch the N900 promo video from last year. Nokia delivered on everything in it. What's to complain about?

man some times i drop my phone off the desk onto a hard wood floor and I dont even look back. i leave it where ever it dropped till it rings or i need it, and is till fine. i must say nokia built one tuff phone with the n900.
no contract, i love maemo, will only switch to meego if most the apps get ported.
I voted "not in a contract (payg)" though technically I do have a rolling contract -- I let the original 18m (of many) with three lapse, sold the existing handset(s) via mazuma and in Jan this year purchased a N900 sim-free. My net outlay ended up around 100-150
I've managed to accidentally drop my n900 a couple feet onto a hard wood floor several times.. Nothing more than a couple invisible scratches.
Admittedly, I -do- have a screen protector, which is quite scratched by now, but it only cost me $0.33, so...
