I know I'm gonna get blasted out of this world and everyone will say go read this and that thread, but believe me I have and haven't found the solution so if you know what to do please help;

the problem started with I stopped getting SMS notifications after PR1.3; the message would just open and not notify me.

I looked through, cleaned up and fiddled with my packages in Xterm (which BTW along with getting rid of Catorise boasted my battery from 7ish hours normal use up to 2 days)

but it seems I've cerated another while the SMS thing still exists!
most of the apps I open, open a black blanc page struggle a bit and then shut down so basically don't work

it seems
libgsf-1 is not configured yet
librsvg2-2 is dependent on libgsf-1
liboffice-0-8 I have no clue??

and also
user/bin/dpkg returns error code (1)

which I think might be the problem behind things (just guessing)

any magical ideas?

Have you installed any apps recently from extras testing or extras devel? If so, delete the last one(s) and see if that helped.

Also, have you backed up your phone recently? If not too much is lost in this process, it can be worth a try.

No I keep track of the apps I install, although I have many from testing and developing but none are recent
the problem with flash is all the PCs and laptops I have at hand are Win 7 so I'm kind of dry!

flashing works fine on Win 7 32-bit. I would def recommend reflashing the rootfs at this point. As long as you do a full backup, reflashing is not a big deal at all.

ok here's the new story!
I have NOTHING installed on my device, I un-installed and purged everything!
When I get an SMS there is no sound, just a system sound of opening an app, that swish sound, and it opens the SMS itself.
Is there any diagnostic code to run to see what's borken?!
oh please do help =_(
