Never mind, I found what the problem was. The package available from the Sygic repository is an incomplete install set intended as an update to those who already have Sygic. I made the same mistake as dalonso here assuming it was a normal, "buy an activation key" install useful e.g. for a trial. So I may as well forget it.

The good news is that there is an actively developed free alternative called modRana.
