Hey bro if you want to update ur N900 i suggest you should change your connection & use Wifi if available or Vodafone Mobile Connect.

Your normal Vodafone GPRS won't work cause that is only for WAP sites.

Which city in India are you located? I know this cause I am also from India in Mumbai.

Sorry to be late in answering.
rootsh enables root access via sudo gainroot to give you the rights of ... root.
apt-get update is the command from the X-Terminal to refresh the package list for your enabled repositories.
Any error during the update command could indicate the problems you are facing, please make sure you have internet access for it to be successful.

No you can call up Vodafone Customer Care & activate Vodafone mobile connect.I do not pay a monhly rental for it just the charges for surfing which is 10p/10kb. Over here there are also special vouchers for unlimited internet on vodafone mobile connect. I use Rs.99 voucher which gives me 2gb data for a month.

So call vodafone & ask them about their offers.

There is no default password on the device, because there is no root access possible until you either install one of rootsh, sudser, openssh-server, maybe some other as well.
You have to have extras repository enabled to install them. If you never heard of any of them, you surely will not have them installed.
There will be no indication to what or if you type while giving the password in linux command line interface.
