Hello all.

I am starting to get back into chess and am about to buy a Saitek CM2010 travel chess set.

But since the N900 has a good CPU so was wondering if anyone knows of a decent chess program that has the features of the Saitek. I.e. Chess trainer with hints. Max elo of 2000 so will be able to hopefully take me there!

As a side note, I would be more then happy to pay for it.

As a last resort, I was going to maybe attempt to compile a linux chess program if possible.

Since I alwys have the N900 with me, it'll save me from having to carry the chess set around!

Thanks.

The pre-installed program does not have chess trainer etc.

I don't think there's any other chess client than the pre-installed one

Hi.

I do have the pre-installed one but it is tough! i played chess on the Blaclberry 9700 and it won with ease!

I did google chess for the N900 and couldnt find anything...so the next thing to try is if someone has successfuly compiled a desktop chess software on the N900?? Anyone pulled it off and now have a complete chess software on the N900 which runs at a usable speed?

Thanks.

Yeah, you do have a point there. It is a pain in the backside.

Not sure if this could be a possible candidate for a port... http://palmopenchess.sourceforge.net/ It's a chess training program for PalmOS and is designed for Arm devices. The C&C+ code is also freely available too

Thanks for the link. Something like that would be perfect!

I see if someone else has already compiled it for another platform...

Cheers!

I recently installed Hiarcs in the Garnet VM and it's pretty good -- its claim to fame is that it has a very natural style, not so computerlike. It cost about $40. I don't think it has a 'trainer' though.

I think a program like Chessmaster has a version for the Palm. It might be your best bet for a trainer. I'll look for more details and post here.

An excellent program called Scid probably has a trainer. You'd probabably have to install it via Easy Debian.

I suck at chess but my experience on the n900 was made worse by the fact that I could hardly tell the pieces apart. I actually never even considered when buying the n900 what I would not play chess on it, but that is how it turned out.

Openchess is free is available on the Garnet VM and has a trainer which I haven't used.

You should probably start with it, I think.

Note: These Palm chess games are easy to install and most have demo versions, I found. No reason to restrict yourself to one

Here is a review of many Palm chess games:

Note: The Chessmaster one is apparently no longer available.

Edit:

Oops, the link above is a good review of Openchess. The reviw of many Palm chess games is here:
