Angry Microsoft bans open source on Windows Phone 7 Marketplace

It seems there will be no open source software available for Nokias using WP7. Doesn't look good for Nokia...

Not quite "no open source software". More "no software where the license requires you to provide the source to anyone". A subtle distinction (and not much help if you want to provide your *GPL project via the WP Marketplace(?!)) but a distinction nonetheless.

Please don't misconstrue this message as support for MSFT's stance.

It's mainly the 'modification' clause, since the MSFT application store is the only way to load applications onto your phone (except the paid developer program) this clause is incompatible with single appstore models. This is the reason it specifically mentions GPLv3, there are many other open source licenses that are perfectly compatible with the conditions.

Apple has the exact same thing in their terms and conditions.

EDIT: FYI

Well no surprise there. This was one of the first things i noticed from the micro$oft CEO announcement, that they intended to provide micro$oft live services (WOW), well for those who do not know, micro$oft live is required to play xbox games online, games which end users have already payed for (same games in PSX3 and other consoles, can go online for free, unlike micro$oft which makes you pay or you wont be able to play the game online), and that is one of the reasons why only sad muppets with less sense then money buy xbox's, why would anyone want to pay for a service which is already free???? Someone should truly sue these crooks.

Windows7... second time you've claimed that XBOX Live has a mandatory fee.

XBOX Live Silver is absolutely free.
