Please don't copy the fruit company's feature strategies or politics. At the other extreme end of their feature count, that's where Maemo/MeeGo belongs.
Difference here is that the device is open-ended and open source, can add your own features and modify your system. But I think even at big amounts of features, the basic key use cases need to work properly as the influence the rest of the usage of the device.
I agree, that it is better to have the core components and the essential applications working well, and worry the community to do the rest if they want, than having everything done half-baked so noone gets interested to complete because nothing is working.
...That's a pretty solid setup as we have 3d drivers with vsync...
Well, that's a really great news ! The tearing with current Maemo driver is unfortunately often quite noticeable - during transitions, list scrolling, screen rotation animation or with the new map dragging method in modRana, etc. Somehow it also seems to be more noticeable in portrait than in landscape
BTW, what about the infamous SGX driver freezing bug ? Any signs of it manifesting with the updated drivers ?
Anyways, looks like I'll have to finally get a microSD card and start testing the new builds
Keep in mind this is a open project. You'll see every little dirty detail of shaping things up towards a stable release and effort and fixes poured into it over time. So it will be kinda like seeing a sausage get made - it looks really bad when it's getting made, but when it's done and you're eating it, it's delicious.
As I understand it, we'll probably start out with a stripped-down MeeGo 1.2 Handset UX image for N900 that matches use cases, hardfp (increases performance) and go from there. That's a pretty solid setup as we have 3d drivers with vsync, phonecalls and SMS already working (but buggy and unpolished).
Nice comparison I think everyone who got N900 with PR 1.0 know what it tastes like
i was thinking, why not see if we can have some new housings for the n900 with the maemo community name on it, rather then the nokia brand.
This is a good idea as my N900 housing is starting to look worse for ware and it is a way of making a "donation" to the developers as they will not accept them directly!!!
I really don't need any mail respond from Nokia customer care (Isn't this almost everything Nokia official support is all about?). But I need all the hardwares working at least from command line and as someone already said we can have an app for ui part. And seems like almost all hardwares are working (with/without bugs) by now: display(obviously), cam, speaker, call, 3G data, charging, sms, mms(?) etc etc. I would like to know what things are in least priority?
Btw from othe side, why to install meego now? It is another os that will be left by nokia and kind of handed over to community. It won't have tons of great and commercial games and apps. We can install all meego application in maemo 5 as all libs of meego can be installed in maemo (correct me!!). Meego will have quite limited ui and functionalities than maemo. Qt will be certainly first choice to developers for developing app and hence will/can develop app for meego without having meego installed in device!
Gerrr!! What I thought 6 months back and what's going on are drastically different! Don't know what to say.

MeeGo has always been in the hands of the community. With luck this will make hardware support more complete (GPS, etc.)

Well, it is a Developer Edition, not a general purpose edition. Of course, if I want commercial games I'll break out my DS or PSP, or sit at my PC.

Not necessarily. All UI and functionality requires development. No one OS is more or less capable than another unless the OS is fundamentally broken. Of course, it's this development effort that Nokia utterly failed to put into Maemo to make it a better phone OS and better for average users.

Intel works on MeeGo Handset UX with the intent only of delivering a reference UX for others to finish and built upon. We've (HW adaptation) here and there helped with some contributions on UI side when needed to speed some things up, but it's not our real duty to even touch UI side.
Weren't we promised a Harmattan UI also on the N900? That's an entirely different thing?
So this will be the handset UX on the N900.
And well also have a Harmattan UI on the N900 at some point?
