Thank you, Renowong, but the Archos tablet works fine collecting email and updating calendar over the same wifi router. The problem must be somewhere in the handling of the Exchange protocol of the N900 in wifi status.

Try the power saving setting on Internet connections on your n900
Go to Settings > Internet connections > Connections > %Your WiFi connection% > Edit > Next > Next > Next >Advanced > Other
