Is there anything on Maemo that makes it so your N900 only scans for wifi in certain locations from either GPS or (preferably) cell network information?

I think Android has an app called Y5 that lets you save relative locations via cell tower information, and makes it so that it only lets it scans for wifi networks when you're near that cell tower. Now, I'm not sure how well that works out in implementation, but it sounds reasonable given that most of the power expenditure with wifi on is when its searching for networks.

I know that maemo has the setting for scan by time interval, but it seems like it would be more reliable to only scan for wifi networks when you're near your home or work. If there isn't anything yet, how hard would it be to make something like this?

Seems like it should be relatively easy if you could grep (or detect change?) the cell tower information, cross reference a whitelist, then start scanning for your saved wifi AP on a short interval while near that tower...

If there is already something like this, that'd be great too ^^
