Yeah. This makes zero sense. Those extra hardware will be completely be wasted with S40 as it doesn't need them nor can it take advantage of them. Is S40 suddenly going to have better specs than N8/E7 and ditching the Symbian and going to make S40 their new high end platform? Yeah right. =P
I have a X3-02 and S40 runs as fast as it ever needs to be already. (especially at this price level)
Makes perfect sense to me. Bada is the same thing. The disruptive in this is the raw performance, the gain in smoothness and speed compared with an old fashioned smartphone OS and the reduced HW cost. S40 + Java on 1GHz phones is something that wil become huge, much larger than any smartphone.
I'm assuming that Kurt guy will be in Australia although I am assuming that they are probably going to do some sort of global video conference as it makes no sense to just announce it in Australua only for people here locally. So I assume Q&A will be part of the global conference? No idea. Either way, I hope to be able to ask some questions to him or anyone else who knows a bit more. (questions will depend on what gets assounced and revealed on that day)
btw, what is the best way to take a photo on my N900 and then use the share feature straight after to upload it somewhere for you guys to all see? I'll be tweeting but also want to upload pics "live" if I can.
What I still don't know is if the 3G connection will be good inside the hotel where they are holding this even. It better be good or hope they provide some form of wireless network.

I can see your point to a certain degree. But then where will Symbian sit? Bada device could play 720p videos from the beginning and play 3D games. S40 can't right now but now it will? Which means it will severly overlap with Symbian^3 phones and will also remove some benefits of S40 phones such as their super long runtimes. (I charge my X3-02 once a week!) Also, the hardware still isn't that cheap enough to make new 1GHz S40 phones to be priced at current dirt cheap prices imo.
The new device will be unveiled and demonstrated for the first time by Kurt Bonnici, product and technology marketing manager at Nokia Australia. ...
Please note this will be a product demonstration only. In his role as product manager, Kurt will only be available to answer technical questions relating to the new device.

If you read my post on my blog (which I linked), it answered your question by the very first sentence....

It's a different ball game. But the low end ecosystem is gigantic and "untapped". Nokia has since long had great plans for S40 and Java, but they really have to speed up if they are going to catch up Bada. Cheap and powerful (in terms of raw power) is a key component and current smartphones is way overengineered for this task.
