FBReader was the first (and so far only) app that I installed on my new 770, but it is so frustrating! I copied 2 ebooks (*.pdb format) to the mmc card via USB, and they show up fine in the file manager. When I add them to the FBReader library, I can locate them and select them, at which time it brings up a Book Info screen. When I fill that out it proceeds to open the book just fine, and I can select text colors and other settings. However, if I ever power off the 770, the books are gone from the library and the text colors have reverted to the standard black on white (which I hate). Why oh why doesn't it remember anything? I have never had problems like this with any other ebook reader on any other platform. I'm beginning to think I just made a big mistake getting this 770.

I just downloaded FBReader on my unit from >> http://www.fbreader.org/maemo/fbreader.install

My color settings are intact after power off/on. What I have observed is that I have to dump the ebooks onto the unit memory because I could not find a way to change the path to direct the reader to read from the mmc card.

There's a tab in the settings called 'config' with a checkbox that says 'save state automatically'.

See if that is unchecked for you.. perhaps that's the problem.

Unless it's a file format issue. I'm using .mobi ebooks from mobipocket.com to do this test.

Update: Ok.. I figured where I went wrong to get media card to detect.. I had to navigate up to the root directory in order to see /media/mmc1. I tested books on card and from unit memory, powered down, powered up, works fine with saved colors.

Thanks, but it still is not working for me. I have only tested using files on the mmc card, but I did check the config tab that you mentioned and it was checked. I didn't try changing colors again, but after I added the book to the library I powered off and back on, and the book was no longer in the library. Maybe you have to close FBReader before you power down?

EDIT: I think that may be it. I closed via the menu first and the book was still there and opened itself again after I power cycled. Seems odd, since a power down sould send a close signal to all open apps the same way as menu->close would do.
