If your device turns itself on and off whilst showing mostly nokia logo during the on intervals. That's what you call a bootloop.

Bootloops can be caused in various ways including deleting critical `system' files, installing programs from extras-devel repository without reading or understanding what the program is used for, etc.

Unfortuntely to cure such symptoms easily would be to reflash the device.

ok I tested out a new battery and it still didn't work...so it's def a software problem! I've never flashed N900 before....let's see how this goes....after the flash will it wipe out everything? files, programs, pics,vids,contacts etc? I don't even think I have a back up...

You might wanna try just flashing rootfs at first see if that is enough to at least let you access the stuff you wanna backup. Read the details on the wiki, and triple check everything before each step.

finally fully flashed my phone. I used this site to do so. http://www.mynokian900.com/2011/03/f...-my-nokia-n900

Also I installed that security update that was supposed to include portrait mode and some other features, but my phone is still in landscape mode?

The security update is just a security update, no other features. If you want potrait mode, install CSSU.

I had CSSU before, and because of that something happened and my phone went in a reboot loop....how about if I just do this for portrait? http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=74980

You could also do that for a potrait desktop of course.
